When to End a Long-Term Commitment

by Rico on March 13th, 2008

You may know that I also blog for The Smart PDA, a tech blog that covers smartphones and PDAs. You may also notice that I’ve written no new posts for the past few weeks now. That’s because I recently quit as The Smart PDA’s blogger. If you’re wondering when to drop a long-term freelancing commitment, you may find the reasons I’ll list below useful:

  1. There was no more room for growth. I can’t go into specific detail, but Creative Weblogging (the blog network that maintains The Smart PDA) was very generous with their compensation. In fact, earning from them sustained me during dry periods! To be honest however, I realized that the time I spent on the blog could’ve been more productive—and lucrative. I felt that I gained tremendous experience as a blogger. Unfortunately, with the way The Smart PDA was set up, there was simply no room for me to grow as a content creator, in monetary and proficiency terms.
  2. Writing for it became a chore. In other words, the passion was gone. When I started writing for The Smart PDA, I was really really really excited. After nearly two years however, the nearly-daily grind of covering the smartphone and PDA industries was starting to become a monotonous gig. There seemed to be no more excitement involved, and I felt that I was just writing for money. You may notice that my last few posts were by-the-number affairs that I couldn’t be proud of. The loss of passion meant that I couldn’t continue doing a good job, which is always important to me.

To be clear, Creative Weblogging was a wonderful employer. All issues I had were immediately dealt with, sometimes by the CEO of the company himself (Torsten Jacobi). My long-term relationship with them proved to be very fruitful, and gave me crucial experience as a blogger-for-hire. But, all good things must end. I realized that to grow as a blogger, writer, and a freelancer, it was time for me to move on.

Fellow freelancers, have you given up a long-term commitment? If so, why? And has your decision proved to be a good one?
