Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

Where You Should Look for Jobs Online

by Rico on June 18th, 2007

For this Monday, I’ll help you get some work. If you’re beginning the work week without any commitments, now’s the perfect time to look for a client and start marketing your skills!

The Internet is a great tool for freelancers to search for contracts, but the convenience comes at a cost. There are actually sites out there that claim to help freelancers and contract workers, when ultimately they’re just misleading. Read on to see the list of freelance job sites I’ve compiled (at Vyoma’s request by the way), and what you should watch out for while looking for jobs online.

First, let’s focus on some sites I know pretty well:

  1. The Golden Pencil: Freelance Writing Jobs. The Golden Pencil, another blog in the business channel of b5media, a member of b5media’s Art & Design channel, regularly features new openings for freelance writers.
  2. The Problogger Job Board. Obviously, a job board for aspiring pro bloggers. Take note that problogging is a regular commitment. It’s usually not done on a per project basis.
  3. Freelance Switch Freelance Jobs. A generic job board that freelancers of almost any kind may find interesting.
  4. Craigslist Jobs Section. Craigslist has been around practically forever, and has a nearly encyclopedic database of job listings. The problem is finding the right one for you, and the fact you should preferably be in the same city as your future client. Also, not all jobs are for freelancers or on a per-project basis.

And now, a generic list, arranged in no particular order:

  1. AllFreelanceWork
  2. ContractedWork
  3. Design Crowd
  4. Get A Freelancer
  5. Adveres Freelance Network
  6. FreelanceSeek
  7. FreelanceWebProgramming
  8. FreelanceWebProjects
  9. RentaCoder
  10. Project Spring
  11. Freelance Auction
  12. Freelance Quotes

Update: Let’s end the list with some sites recommended by some of you, dear readers:

  1. Scriptlance. Courtesy of Sergey.
  2. Elance. Courtesy of Kamen 123 and Darlene.
  3. Guru. Courtesy of Kamen 123.
  4. Lancebot - This so-called “Freelance Search Engine” looks genuinely interesting, managing endless lists of openings with a search engine interface. Courtesy of Carlos.
  5. Sologig. Courtesy of Shannon.

I know there are more out there, and if you’d like to share a site not listed, feel free to do so. Make sure it’s legit! I’ve learned that many self-styled “freelancing” job boards out there are typical examples of domain squatting, a link farm meant only to boost the visibility of other websites, or worse of all, just a page trying to sell something. You need a little patience when looking for genuinely useful websites, because there are so many fakes out there.

It also helps to ask an experienced freelancer about which job boards he considers indispensable. That’s because great freelance job boards make it easier for a client to find freelancers that suit their requirements, and for freelancers to locate their preferred contrats. Have a great work week dear readers!

Anne has one of the best lists going. Ms. Wayman updates her list thrice weekly doing all of this while attempting to keep her own career on fire. Kudos to Anne!

kamen 123: I’m sure the guys at RentaCoder must be sorry you feel that way. Is there any other job site you like to check out for contracts? :)

Matt: Her prolific listing complements her prolific writing!

Vyoma: Hope they turn out to be tremendously useful for you. :)

Sergey: Oh yeah, I forgot to include Scriptlance. Thanks for reminding me!

Rico: rentacoder guys are acting like a child - they try to hide the facts. But it is fair to warn everyone
There are many other web sites working as online marketplace, I can send you list by email
For example you can add elance.com and guru.com
    :-)

I was out at elance.com for at least 2 hours going through their list of jobs. Everything from writing, customer service, to virtual assistance. I have been out there a couple of time and I finally bid on a job. It will be interesting to see if I get the opportunity.

There is a membership fee, as low as $11.00 month.

    This article is VERY good!

Kamen 123: I’d love to see the list. Better yet, if you blog about it, I can link to you from here.

Darlene: Ah, so a monthly fee really is worth it? I’ve been hesitant to try out job boards that aren’t free, because I always think the free sites can provide equal, if not better, service.

BestJobs.com has lots of freelance work posts. But like Craigslist, you have to be very very careful so you don’t end up getting scammed.

    Sergey I.Grachyov:
You can see in my blog that your behaviour is well known pattern: you try to prove your opinion with lies and silly statements. The same pattern follow the dummies in rac staff
Just stop with your silly behaviour
No need to earn money with lies and barking
Just contact me, I’ll help you find real job and you will see projects that I have completed
Your stupidity is fun for me but no need to involve here other companies
    :-)

  • Sergey I.Grachyov
    Jul 30, 2007 at 1:48 am

Kamen, no needs to “contact” you,
because you haven’t any completed projects.
I ask you many times: Please, show projects(links), completed by you. You can’t show anything.
Fairy tales about your “experience” is fun for me.

“no need to involve here other companies”
Because I can contact these companies(if any) and outline how you insult them and why you was fired.

  • kamen 123

    Sergey I.Grachyov:
Your silly behaviour is transparent for many people
Only the dummies in rentacoder do not understand
If you contact other companies you will become source of fun for them
Just stop with your silly barking and contact me to help you find real job

“If you contact other companies you will become source of fun for them”

Like this: “Kamen? whats ‘kamen’? We didn’t know anything about ‘kamen’”.

Please, help yourself to find your 1st job.

    Sergey I.Grachyov:

it is obvious that you can’t find real job
This is why you earn money with lies and barking for rentacoder

you need help, please do not worry I’ll help you

and you will see projects that I have done

    :-)

you will become fun for many companies if you contact them to speak about me

    Sergey I.Grachyov:
your main project is to bark and lie in silly attempts to defend the dummies in rac

Your stupid behaviour is transparent and is fun for many people including companies that I have experience with.

You can see in my blog how several other unknown programmers explained you that you are missing the entire point ( in google groups )

You and the dummies in rac do not understand that barking can not change facts

    :-)

  • Sergey I.Grachyov
    Jul 30, 2007 at 2:34 am

You haven’t companies that you have experience with, because you can’t show any completed projects.

But it is better if you contact me. I’ll help you to find real job and you will see some of my projects
Barking of a dog can not change facts
It is time the dummies in rac to deeply regret their incredible stupidity

Kamen, you can’t show any project, completed by you.
I ask you about completed project one year ago, but you still can’t show anything.
Please, help yourself to find your 1st job.

    Jul 30, 2007 at 2:59 am

Sergey I.Grachyov:Please do not speak about projects because you have experience only with patches. You have experience only with quite small tasks for several dollars. This is not projects. This is patches. This is one of your lies. Please admit the truth. Your silly statements and lies are useless. You are excellent source of fun.
It is time the dummies in rac to deeply regret their incredible stupidity

    My lonely Bulgarian unemployed,

Sergey I.Grachyov: you can’t speak about projects because you know only patches
So please go to lie and bark at rac
    Here your behaviour is transparent
    :-)

  • Sergey I.Grachyov
    Jul 30, 2007 at 3:19 am

Kamen, you can’t speak about project because you haven’t any.
I hope your dole is good :-)

    Sergey I.Grachyov:
You and rac staff are proficient to lie and to blame someone else. But I have prefect evidences
I know that the truth hurts and people like you and rac staff can not stand the pain. But this is the life.
Just stop with the lies and I’ll help you to work for company that I have experience with
    :-)

    Sergey I.Grachyov:
Your behaviour proves that the stupidity can not be beaten but can not be hidden
You can’t change the perfect evidences that I have with your barking. Just go to lie and bark at rentacoder.
You and rac staff are excellent source of fun with your stupidity :-)

  • Sergey I.Grachyov
    Jul 30, 2007 at 3:58 am

Kamen, your revenge against RentACoder is failed.
You are BANNED and this is very good for community.
My _success_ at RentACoder, GetAFreelancer and Scriptlance can not be beaten AND can not be hidden
    Have I nice day(dole)
    :-)

  • kamen 123
    Jul 31, 2007 at 1:10 am

Sergey you are excellent example of the way of working with rentacoder staff

I have PERFECT evidences that I’m right but your mental abilities do not allow you to understand
And you try to hide the facts with barking and silly statements

The same is rac staff: they are not able of understanding the PERFECT documentation of ASP/IIS and they think that Microsoft are responsible. Also rac staff think that I’m responsible for their incredible stupidity

Your behaviour is obvious. You are excellent source of fun. Your stupidity is obvious. Your barking is endless. But barking can not change facts. You silly excuses and lies do not matter.

It is time the dummies in rac staff to deeply regret their incredible stupidity

    :-)
