Why Dropping FTP May Not Work for Small-Time Freelancers
43 Folders does a great job of informing everyone about the apparent obsolescence of FTP. But as far as I know, the proposed replacement, SFTP, really is more secure, but won’t it require web hosting providers to use more powerful servers?
A commenter on Folders sums it up nicely:
Why every hosting provider doesn’t provide ssh/sftp support? Perhaps because crypting/decrypting large amount of data requires a lot more CPU cycles than sending them in clear.
…For people who are really serious about security, a small dedicaced [sic] server worths the price.
In other words, isn’t using SFTP to maintain portfolio and personal sites beyond the financial reach of most freelancers? Or am I simply missing a more affordable way of implementing it?
