Why Freelancers Can Travel More
Getting to travel is great, but some things keep it from becoming an everyday thing: Time and money (or the lack of both). Not to mention your responsibilities back home.
Sure, as a freelancer you have greater control over your time. So it’s easier to schedule those outings. But then, traveling remains an expensive proposition, with those long trips requiring the savings of a few months—or years. And as Gregory Hubbs says: “The challenge always lay in figuring out how to extend time abroad before exhausting the budget.”
Yet it’s possible to take advantage of your flexibility as a freelancer. You can extend your vacation as long as you want. That’s because you can actually get a “short-term or summer job” to pay for it. In fact, if you’ve already built a relationship with a client who lives where you want to go, it’s conceivable that you could continue working for him, actually getting to meet him in person, and use the time off to enjoy yourself.
Don’t get me wrong. This approach isn’t about living in luxury. Sometimes you’ll have to bear barely-livable conditions. When my family traveled to Europe a few years ago we usually had to make do with cramped “hotels.” But it was worth it. If you’re looking for a new experience, free from the pressures of time and money, maybe this is your best bet.
