Why I’m Hopelessly Addicted

Oops. I almost lost it there.
Over the last few days, while enjoying Christmas with friends and loved ones, I started browsing through Memory Alpha, a Star Trek Wiki. The Trekkie in me eagerly gulped down all that information on my favorite sci-fi franchise and pretty soon, I was hooked.
At first, I was afraid that this new habit would be hard to break once my vacation holiday was over. Reading through the Wiki is currently taking up a lot of my time, time I will need come January 2.
But then, I realized that it was actually no problem, as I think getting rid of my newfound addiction would be easier than I thought. One reason why I get so pumped up when I work, aside from concentrating on fields that really appeal to me, is because I’m addicted to it.
For instance, I find writing addicting because it lets me express my thoughts relatively quickly and accurately, perhaps a by-product of my relative weakness at verbal communication. This is an aspect of writing that I’ve realized long ago, and this allure is what keeps me writing, for business and personal reasons alike.
In short, no matter what kind of distractions catch your attention, maybe getting back on track is as easy as remembering what exactly makes you addicted to your work. And focusing on that to provide you with the fix you need to make other things seem less appealing.
So, what are you addicted to?

well… I’m a member of at least 4 12 step groups… have even considered starting a group for those of us so addicted… and also to writing, or maybe even more to the point to working for myself… I’m such a good worker and such a terrible employee… and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

My husband is a Treekie-Addict too. Maybe the two of you can help each other. Maybe not.

Anne: Being a terrible employee is the price of our addiction, I’m afraid ;)
