Why the Right Words Lead to the Desired Result
They always say walk the walk, but talking the talk is just as important.
Before you can set a pattern of consistency, a (potential) client mostly bases his assumptions about your proficiency and passion with your words. The words you say in person, over the phone, on IM, and through email. Using the right words will lead to the desired result—getting hired—because they make people confident of your ability to deliver.
Think of words as the landing page of a sales website. They entice customers with a promised benefit to lead them to action. The same thing should apply whenever you’re trying to convince someone of your value as a contract worker. There are at least two aspects to this: firmness and honesty.
Firmness. Straightforward phrases such as “I have experience with this kind of work” are much more effective than “I believe I know how to do this.” Clearly stating your abilities and the unique benefit they provide will turn more heads. It’s better than simply disguising your uncertainty with weasel words. If you know what you can do and how you can help a client, there’s no point in being soft about it. Firmness gives the impression that you know what you’re doing, which is a big plus for those looking to invest their hard-earned cash for maximum return.
Honesty. Your firmness should be balanced by truthfulness. It makes no sense to claim something you can’t back up, telling clients things they want to hear. Saying “I can do design and programming” when you can’t code to save your life is dangerous. Failing to deliver as promised is a great way to ruin your credibility as a professional freelancer and reduce the number of people willing to avail of your expertise. Honest people are easier to trust, because they never leave others guessing. Even if clearly stating your limitations as a contract worker may be deal-breaker, it’s always great working with people who are all about “what you see is what you get.”
The right words are always firm and honest. But not necessarily just that. How else do the right words lead to the desired result?
