Why You Should Keep Your Equipment in Tip-Top Shape

by Rico on October 8th, 2007

By keeping our equipment in tip-top shape, buying new stuff won’t be so expensive.

Any freelancer uses something to get done. It could be a camera to take pictures, a mobile to keep in touch with clients, or even the laptop I’m using to write this post.

But one day, we’ll want something better. You’ll have to spend money to get it (unless you’ve arranged for payment in kind or something similar). Since you’d want to touch your savings as little as possible, you want to raise as much cash as you can, which means selling your old equipment.

Second-hand equipment that’s still in good condition usually sells for a lot higher than their worn out counterparts, and that’s a good reason why you should take good care of your equipment. When the time comes to give away the old stuff, you can get a better price.

By being able to raise more money, you’ll have to spend less to buy new items. It’s like my aunt who can buy a new car every two years. She makes an effort to properly maintain her ride, so that when she trades it in for a new one, she doesn’t have to pay that much.

Of course, getting maximum buck for your current equipment requires looking for the right buyer. That involves advertising on the right sites, or taking advantage of your network. But this will amount to nothing if you don’t have anything decent to offer in the first place.
