Willing Your Way to Better Productivity: Sub-Listing

by Rico on June 8th, 2008

Do you suffer from a short attention span? Need to make full use of your time to meet a deadline? I’ve found a way to will yourself to work. All you need is a piece of paper, a pen, and a willingness to stick to a self-imposed schedule. Here we go! Continue reading to see how breaking down tasks and sub-listing turns you into a more productive person.

  1. First, look through what you have to do for the day. Make a list of them on the left side of the paper.
  2. Next, break down each task to sub-tasks. For instance, writing the outline, the actual writing, and proofreading, are sub-tasks of writing an essay. Write these sub-tasks on the right of each task, separated by commas.
  3. Now, decide when you will take breaks. It could be after every other task, or after every three. It’s up to you, but make sure you budget more time to work than for breaks! Write down the scheduled between tasks as desired.
  4. Start working on the first task. As you complete each sub-task, cross it out on the paper. Feel the satisfaction as you cross out each phase of a project, coming closer to its completion.
  5. Repeat the above steps will all the tasks you have for the day, taking breaks as planned.

Why not use a checklist? Well, a checklist features generic items to cross off. This approach, which I like to call sub-listing, makes the required tasks more specific.

Sub-listing improves productivity, because it keeps aware of exactly what you have to do. Sure, you know you have to write that essay, but do you have write the outline or just write?

So far, this approach has worked well for me. Feel free to try it out for yourself, and do let me know how effective it is for you.
