Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

With Your Portfolio Site, the Devil Really is in the Details

by Rico on July 28th, 2008

At last, your portfolio site is up!

Finally, hours spent choosing a good web host, creating content oriented towards winning over prospects, and setting up the website have paid off!

One more thing though: have you tried walking through your finished site? Did you make sure that everything works, and that all links lead to where they’re supposed to go?

I only mention this because the devil really is in the details. I was looking for a freelance designer for a friend, and came across an interesting prospect. This freelancer’s portfolio site was well laid-out, provided all the information I needed, and used previous work to maximum effect. All that remained was for me to click on a link that would allow me to leave a quote.

Unfortunately, the link did not work. Being too lazy to look for alternative ways of communication, I decided to leave the website look for someone else. In other words, the freelance designer lost potential business.

No matter how talented you are, or how well you submit projects on time and to spec, make sure your online presence works (at least, if you’re interested in acquiring business through a website). Remain aware of all the details necessary, and make sure everything works. If you don’t you may literally end up with less money in your bank account.
