Vacationing Worry-Free

Thanks to Sasha for the wonderful photo!
I just came back from a weekend beach vacation with a loved one and some friends. And it was the most fun I’ve had in a while. Mainly because I had no commitments to worry about, no projects to handle. So I was really able to take it easy and relax, free from the weight my livelihood brings.
This was only possible because the last few days before the trip were spent losing sleep. At all costs, I finished everything that had to be done. Or at the very least made sure I did my part. The decision paid off actually: even though I had to drive to the port, I was able to rest on the ferry. And somehow, someway, I was able to make up the lost sleep on a white beach resort. Now I have healthy reddish “tan” (my white skin refuses to turn brown for some reason), and am experiencing a surprisingly energetic Monday.
But then I realized, if I planned things any better, I would’ve been able to avoid losing sleep entirely. If I was more aware that last Saturday and Sunday meant getting cut off from all forms of Internet access (i.e., not being able to get any work done), I would’ve increased my work load earlier, cutting down on the need for eyebags as the vacation approached. Unfortunately, this only became clear to me last Thursday, meaning I had to cram to finish everything.
In short, the key to enjoying vacations as a freelancer means a willingness to get things done at any cost, and considering the break as part of your plans. The point is to set things up so that you won’t have to worry about any unfinished business as you savor some grilled fish, sip some Mango juice, and live without a care in the world.
