Contract Worker - Freelancing Experiences

Yet Another Reason Why You Should be a Freelancer

by Rico on November 16th, 2006

If you work at home, you choose what you can access. Many corporations maintain IT departments, and one of their jobs is to determine which sites the employees can or can’t visit.

With good reason of course. Many Filipinos can’t live without Friendster. So the first thing many local IT experts do is prohibit access to the social networking website. If they didn’t, many corporate networks would have to deal with unnecessary traffic, unnecessary in the sense that checking on your friends isn’t work. And the limitations imposed by the IT department lowers the chance of viruses, malware, or spyware infecting company property.

But working at home doesn’t come with such restrictions. It’s your Internet connection, and you decide what to do with it. You can check out Friendster, YouTube, or even your favorite pr0n site. It’s good to have total control over what you can do online, but of course, with great power comes great responsibility. You alone are also responsible for staying productive, and protecting yourself from the badness out there.

So enjoy your freedom—and use it wisely!
